Somewhere Out There

Bob called me in Toronto the night before Christmas and asked if I had any other song ideas that we should consider before we headed back to Hawaii to finish the album in January. The phone call propelled me to write seven new songs during the ten days we had off at Christmas. When we got back to Maui, he combined a verse from one song and a chorus from another and 'Somewhere Out There' was born.- Raine Maida, Nettwerk Management, 2002

Then the song Somewhere Out There, that really is about that feeling, you know, when you're sitting in a restaurant and you see a couple sitting next to you at a table and they're not talking, and five minutes later they're still not talking, and you start to feel uncomfortable for them, you know? It's about trying the -- the physical connection is one thing but it's trying to get back to that emotional and spiritual connection. It's all good, about the positivity when you finally get back there and how important it is, and it's work but it's worth it.- Raine Maida, MuchMusic, 25 Jun. 2002

It's a song about connection, physical, emotional and spiritual connection. A good parallel is when you're in a restaurant and you see a couple sitting together but they're not talking. An hour later, you look over and it makes you feel uncomfortable to see that they're not having a good time. And they're sitting right next to each other but they're not really 'together.' It's weird to see it happen. It makes you appreciate people you do share a connection with.- Raine Maida, Katrillion, 2002

Brief References

Last time I talked to you
You were lonely and out of place
You were looking down on me
Lost out in space
We laid underneath the stars
Strung out and feeling brave
I watched the red orange glow
I watched you float away

Down here in the atmosphere
Garbage and city lights
You've gone to save your tired soul
You've gone to save our lives
I turned on the radio
To find you on satellite
I'm waiting for the sky to fall
I'm waiting for a sign

And all we are
Is all so far

You're falling back to me
The star that I can see
I know you're out there
Somewhere out there
You're falling out of reach
Defying gravity
I know you're out there
Somewhere out there

Hope you remember me
When you're home sick and need a change
I miss your purple hair
I miss the way you taste
I know you'll come back someday
On a bed of nails I wait
I'm praying that you don't burn out
Or fade away

And all we are
Is all so far
